Exhibition on “Eco-City Planning” held at BUET

Prof. Dr. A.M.M. Safiullah, Vice-Chancellor of BUET has formally inaugurated an exhibition on “Eco-City Planning” at BUET on 5^th July 2007. Department of Urban and Regional Planning of BUET and Work for a Better Bangladesh (WBB Trust) have jointly organized this exhibition. Prof. Dr. A.M.M. Safiullah attended the Inauguration Ceremony of the exhibition as chief guest and Prof. Dr. Sarwar Jahan, Dean, Faculty of Architecture and Planning, BUET attended it as Special Guest. Prof. Dr. Roxana Hafiz, Head, Department of Urban and Regional Planning chaired this program. Md. Shakil Bin Kashem, Lecture of URP department gave a brief introduction to the concept of Eco-city Planning in this Inauguration Program.

In this exhibition four Eco-City plans and models along with their planning concepts are being exhibited. The students of Urban and Regional Planning of BUET have prepared these models. Through the Eco-city plans and models, the students have explored different ways to implement the concept of Eco-city in the particular context of Bangladesh. This kind of exhibition is being held for the first time in Bangladesh that will show the initiatives of the future Urban Planners to build livable and sustainable urban areas in Bangladesh.

Eco-city is about building cities and towns based on ecological principles for the long term sustainability, cultural vitality and health of the Earth's biosphere. Cities are where most people live, where most resources and energy are consumed, and where most wastes are produced. To avert further destruction of the earth's life-support systems, cities must be transformed into places where people can live their lives healthily while reducing their ecological impacts. The great challenge of this century will be to harmonize human activity with the earth's fragile biosphere. Eco-city is an initiative in this way that focuses on the overall sustainability of the city along with the ecology of the earth.

This exhibition on Eco-City Planning is being held at the Cafeteria Extension of Central Auditorium Complex of BUET. The exhibition schedule is: 5 July 2007 (6:00 pm–8 pm), 6 and 7 July 2007 (10 am-8 pm).
