Intel Bangladesh Association (IBA)
Initiative for BUET

Introduction

The idea of a coordinated effort from Intel to help BUET was conceived from the incidents of:

a. Reception of  Professor Dr. Nooruddin Ahmed,  Ex-Vice Chancellor of BUET in Silicon Valley by American Association of Bangladeshi Engineers and Architects (AABEASV) in a banquet (April 2001).  Professor Nooruddin returning back and opening a foreign account “BUET Development Fund” for BUET and urging  NRBs by email to help them in education and research (Aug. 2001).

b. Email from Dr. M. M. Shahidul Hassan (Head of EEE Dept., BUET) asking NRBs to help them establish two simulation labs in BUET (August 2001).

Goals

Short term goals

  • To establish a 30 PC simulation lab for the department of EEE and CSE of BUET, to be completed by July 2002 (project finalized).

  • To establish a Unix/PC lab in BUET to be used by all the departments of the University (details are being discussed), by mid of 2003.

  • Work with other external efforts directed for BUET.

  • Be a model for other companies like SUN, CISCO, TI, Microsoft where there are significant bodies of professionals of Bangladeshi origin.

  • Work with BUET and get in sync regarding their plans with ours.

Mid term goals

  • Work with BUET to expand, modernize, and support the education and research in the areas related to computer and electrical engineering.

  • Help expand and establish three separate major programs in BUET with all the up-to-date curricula: a) Electrical Engineering, b) Computer Engineering, and, c) Computer Science, both in undergraduate and graduate levels with adequate lab and research facilities.

  • Get Intel employees involved with BUET students and teachers in various research and educational projects.

  • Help establish a concerted educational effort for science, math, and engineering in some selected Bangladeshi educational institutions by making a common platform out of NRB professional groups.

Long Term Goal

  • Help BUET keep up-to-date in curricula and facilities in all technical disciplines.

  • Help establish BUET among the top 20 technical educational institutions in Asia by 2010.

  • Help establish a solid ground for some other selected educational institutions in Bangladesh, especially, in the areas of mathematics, science and engineering.

Four

Recently IBA has raised a fund of $24,550 (Twenty four thousand five hundred fifty US dollar) and given it to AABEA. Intel will match this amount on 1:2 basis so the total should become $73,650 after the matching.

The Joint Working group (AABEA, BUET and IBA) will work closely soon on how the money will be spent, project plans and implementations details.

This is a joint press release (AABEA and IBA) to the web and other avenue to develop the awareness on  this effort so that other Alumni and AABEA chapters can duplicate the same
initiatives and visions and spread the words to build our motherland institutions.

Five

Professor Dr. Md. Alee Murtuza has recently joined BUET as Vice Chancellor. BUET VC Professor Dr. Md. Alee Murtuza is one of the august members of the Joint working group (JWG).
